When someone says, “you are what you eat,” they’re really not kidding.
Proper nutrition goes a long way towards keeping us healthy. That begins with a digestive system that’s working smoothly and effectively. And while a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains is a good preventative measure against colon cancer, it also can help get things back on track if you’re having less serious digestive issues.
In addition to promoting regularity and colon health, eating right also helps the front end of the digestive process. Cutting back on fried foods, and other things that are hard to digest, is a great way to reduce and even eliminate heartburn and other stomach-related problems.
Just as important as what you eat is how much you eat, and when you’re having meals. Practice portion control so that you’re not overfilling your stomach. When you do, that slows the entire process, and makes the entire system work harder than it should. Also, try to eat dinner earlier rather than later, so your body has time to digest that meal before you head for bed.
And last but not least, remember to drink plenty of water. The entire digestive system benefits from being well lubricated, so keep everything moving smoothly with several glasses a day.
